When I first became interested in Relocation Astrology, there wasn’t much about it on the web, and even now it is difficult to find good quality sites that deal with the subject, so in this series of posts, we’re going to have an in-depth look at it. What is relocation astrology, and how can you use it to make informed choices regarding holiday travel or more permanent moves?

Basically, the way to calculate a relocation chart, is to have a chart drawn up for your date of birth, but instead of putting the time and place you were born, you change your birth place to the country or city you want to live in and you change your time of birth to the time of birth you would have if you had been born in that place. This means that as you move around the world, the sign on the Ascendant changes and therefore so do the house placements in the relocation chart.

People relocate for all sorts of reasons. With air travel becoming less expensive, more people are taking advantage of that by going on holiday or moving away from their original place of birth more than ever before. But how can you make sure that your dream destination won’t turn out to be a nightmare once you get there? Do your homework first.

Ask yourself why you want to move from where you are now, and what you envision your life to be like in the new place? If you are being offered a transfer by your company, then you may want to check if there will be any major changes to your career houses; ie. the 2nd, 6th and 10th- before you agree to move. To go from having a lucky placement like your Sun or Jupiter in the 10th natally to having it in a tougher placement like Saturn or Neptune could be hard to get used to.

But if you have a choice as to where you would like to relocate to, then the possibilities are endless. So, let’s look at the first thing to consider:

The Ascendant

If you move more than 4 or 5 hours away from your place of birth, this will give you a different Ascendant, and thus, a different outlook on life. Other people will also percieve you in a new light as opposed to how they do in your hometown. Let’s say that your natal Ascendant is in Capricorn. Your childhood may have been lonely or unhappy, and you may have had early responsibilities such as caring for a sick parent or younger siblings thrust on you from a young age. So you have grown into a shy and serious adult with a rather pessimistic attitude towards life. You may be highly ambitious and focused on your career without much time for romance or socialising.

Now let’s say that you move far away from your place of birth, thus changing your Ascendant sign. Now it’s in Libra. You find you make friends easily, and are invited out to social gatherings much more than you were at home. You start to realise that you don’t like being alone, and would actually like a partner. Dating and relationships take on more importance in your life. Your social circle widens and you find you are more attractive to other people. The burdens of your early life fall away, as you enjoy this new-found popularity. All this happens not so much because you have changed as a person, but because your Ascendant or Rising sign is like a filter through which other people see you and in some cases, project a certain image on to you. By changing your Ascendant sign, you come across as completely different to how you usually are, and this is what others respond to in the new place.
