Of course, there are plenty of other indicators in a chart which show you the sorts of occupations a person may persue, but in my experience, I have found that by looking at the Ascendant and Midheaven together, you get a better picture of a person- who they think they are, how other people percieve them, and where their natural talents lie.
The Ascendant-and therefore the Ascendant ruler- can reveal a lot about a person’s motivations in terms of a career. Sigmund Freud had a Scorpio Ascendant, which made Pluto his Ruling Planet. People with this placement love a good mystery and what bigger mystery is there than the workings of the human mind? He would already have had a natural ability for observing people and finding out what makes them tick, so by becoming a psychologist, he found the perfect outlet for his Scorpio Ascendant. But with his Midheaven in Leo, Freud wouldn’t have wanted to be just any kind of psychologist. He would have wanted fame and recognition for his work. And by focusing on taboo subjects like sex and family dysfunction, he was assured plenty of attention for his groundbreaking work in the field.
Let’s take another example. Oprah Winfrey has her Ascendant in Sagittarius, which explains her enduring popularity and strong humanitarian streak. People admire Oprah for her honesty and candour. She is genuinely interested in people from all walks of life, and this sincerity shines through, making people warm to her. Add to this her Midheaven in Libra, which is concerned with equality and justice, and you can see how this combination made her eager to help others better their own lives. Both of these signs are open-minded and believe in fairness. In confronting issues such as racism and sexism on her tv show, Oprah paved the way for a much more tolerant society.
So, what would be the interpretation for someone with their Ascendant in Taurus and Aquarius on the Midheaven? Well, with Taurus on the Ascendant, Venus is the Ruling Planet in this chart. So we would expect the subject to have a love of beauty and form, which could be expressed in a career as a dancer or a painter. Aquarius is associated with design, so this person could be a fashion designer or an architect. If it were Capricorn on the Midheaven instead of Aquarius, we might expect the Taurus/ Capricorn combination to produce a successful business person, a director of some sort or even someone who was high up in government.
A Cancerian/ Aries combo might produce someone who joins the Armed Forces, particularly the Army or Marines. Cancerian Risers are fiercely patriotic and protective of their homeland, whilst an Arian Midheaven gives a liking for dangerous and traditionally macho careers. Fire fighters and police men and women may also have this combination.
So just taking your Ascendant and Midheaven, see if you can identify how the combination of these two signs in your own chart have influenced the kinds of jobs or careers you’ve had up until now. And please feel free to share in the comments section. My Gemini Ascendant thrives on communication. LOL.
